Technical Overview:

FastPage 3 is a CGI (Common Gateway Interface) application. It is installed on the web server, either in a shared cgi-bin directory or as a subdirectory of the website that will use it. Once installed and configured, only a web browser is required to edit the content of web pages (or other text-only format documents) on the web server.

FastPage is written in perl and was designed to have as few system requirements as possible. It is the intention of the developers of FastPage to provide a product that will run on any platform. Although there are more modern tools for creating web applications, perl is perfect for FastPage because of its wide support on multiple platforms. FastPage is only run (executed) when pages are updated, so FastPage enabled websites do not add any performance overhead to the operation of the website like some dynamic content-driven technologies.

Any document (web page or other text-only format file) that resides on the web server can be edited with FastPage. Usernames and passwords are assigned for each document using the included web-based FastPage Profile Manager.

Web pages are 'FastPage enabled' by inserting special FastPage tags in the body of the document around the content that will be 'editable.' As the developer, you determine what parts of the website people can edit, so you can be sure that nothing else will be touched or accidentally broken.

The FastPage Editor can be customized to display a different header and footer. Each element of the FastPage editor has features that can be changed including the size of the input boxes for each field type and more. Advanced tracking tools like system logging and page update email notification are available in the standard FastPage configuration file on all versions of the software.
